Upper Mustang Trekking is an adventure that takes you to the remote trans-Himalayan region of Upper Mustang in northwestern Nepal. It is often referred to as the "Forbidden Kingdom" due to its restricted access and its preserved Tibetan Buddhist and Thakali culture. The trek offers a unique and humbling experience as you explore the rich history, culture, and dramatic landscapes of this mystical land.
Located in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, Upper Mustang is characterized by a barren moonscape with eroded sandstone pillars and colourful mosaic-like terraces of red, yellow, and brown. The landscape resembles that of Tibet, with its distinct features and unique charm. The region is relatively easy to trek, making it suitable for people of all ages.
The trek to Upper Mustang takes you through a treeless and arid landscape, with strong winds blowing across the area in the afternoon. It receives significantly less rainfall compared to other parts of Nepal due to its location in the rain shadow. Most of the local population resides near the river at an elevation of approximately 2300 meters above sea level.
Upper Mustang is divided into two regions: the southern and northern parts. The northern region shares similarities in language, culture, and traditions with the Tibetan people. Lo-Mustang, the capital of Upper Mustang, is a walled city ruled by a religious king. Life in Mustang has remained relatively untouched by modern civilization, maintaining its ancient traditions and unhurried pace.
One of the highlights of the Upper Mustang Trek is the breathtaking mountain scenery. The trek offers spectacular views of Dhaulagiri, which stands at 8167 meters, and Annapurna I, which reaches 8091 meters. You will be surrounded by more than 35 mountains over 6000 meters high, providing a truly awe-inspiring experience. The elevation of the trek ranges from 2815 meters to 3780 meters above sea level.
To embark on the Upper Mustang Trek, you can choose various modes of ta transportation such as trekking, jeep tour, bike ride, or a combination of tour and trek. The area has witnessed an increase in tourist inflow, resulting in the development of tea houses to accommodate travellers. However, the region still maintains its remote and unique charm.
Before embarking on the trek, it is important to obtain the necessary permits, including the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit (ACAP). These permits help protect and preserve the cultural and natural heritage of the region.
The Upper Mustang Trek offers a fascinating journey into a hidden and mysterious part of Nepal. With its rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and unique traditions, it is a trek that captivates adventurers seeking an unforgettable experience.
